Windows Thin PC and RDP 8.1 Client

When working on a VDI Project involving RemoteFX, the idea of using Windows Thin PC came up to take advantage of old hardware.  If you are not familiar with Windows Thin PC, it is a stripped down version of Windows 7 (Windows 7 Embedded to be exact).  When configuring Windows Thin PC and running Windows Update on it, you may find that many updates that you want are not deemed applicable to the system by Windows Update or ConfigMgr.  A very important one of these updates are the RDP 8.0/8.1 clients.

These updated RDP clients improve the performance of and features of RemoteFX, as well as provide other benefits.  The process of installing this update, while is not difficult isn’t overly straight forward.  First off, you will need to download all the updates in their x86 variety, as that is the architecture that Windows Thin PC runs on.  Secondly, you will need to install 5 Updates (only 4 are required, but I recommend all 5 as it brings all RDP 8.X features in play).  The list of updates and the order they need to be installed are listed below:

Once all are installed and the system has been rebooted, you can open the RPD client, right click on the RDP icon in the top left  hand corner of the window and click About.  On that page, you should see the following text at the bottom: “Remote Desktop Protocol 8.1 supported”
